Description
Autonomous robot car with Arduino Mega
This autonomous robot car is the most complex build in the shop. It runs on an Arduino Mega, uses ultrasonic sensors for obstacle avoidance, and can also be controlled over Bluetooth from your phone.
The car has two modes. In autonomous mode, four HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors (front, back, left and right) detect obstacles and the car steers around them on its own. In manual mode, you pair the HC-05 Bluetooth module with your phone and drive with the F, B, L, R and S commands; A switches back to autonomous.
Both modes live in one sketch; you switch on the fly from the app.
Why Arduino Mega?
The Mega has more pins and more memory than the Uno. This project needs a lot of I/O: four ultrasonic sensors, the motor shield, and the Bluetooth module. On an Uno, you would run out of pins fast. The Mega handles it without any pin sharing tricks.
The Adafruit Motor Shield V1.2 sits on top of the Mega and drives the four DC motors directly (M1/M2 left, M3/M4 right). No extra H-bridge boards needed.
Building the autonomous robot car
The seven printed parts (chassis frame, lower and upper plate, Arduino holder, two motor holders, USB access cover) print in PLA; the four geared motors and the plates bolt on with M3 screws. Budget an evening for assembly and soldering the motor leads.
The wiring diagram covers every single connection. If you follow it step by step, nothing should be left to guess.
What is in the package
- STL files for the chassis frame, plates, Arduino holder, motor holders and USB cover (7 parts)
- Arduino code, wiring diagram and parts list: in the free step-by-step tutorial (link below)
